Stylishly Smooth Transitions into Fall Fashion

Baby it's cold outside...oh wait, now it's warm. That's the way the early Fall goes in the Mid-Atlantic region. Leave the house in the morning and its 50 degrees; by 1 pm, it's 72 degrees. What's a Fall Fashionista to do?  Believe it or not, your summer gear will serve you through the fluctuating temps of late September, October, and mid-November. You only need to layer a favorite summer dress or skirt or pants with a few transition staples, and I promise you will make it to your winter wardrobe in style.

"Office Girl": Dress by Tracy Reese, Top by White House Black Market, Boots by Steve Madden
This gray and black dress is a summer favorite of mine.  It is gauzy and girlie, lightweight, and timelessly fashionable with it's sweet keyhole neckline, a-line shape and pleats.  I wanted to wear it to the office on a day where my weather app called for a sunny 66 degrees, so I added a long-sleeved v-neck shirt in a finely ribbed material (think a dressy thermal).  A pair of suede over the knee boots (because what is Fall without your over the knee boots) provided much needed coverage for bare legs and a summer dress turned into a Fall stunner.

"Casual Friday": Pants by H&M, shirt by Target, Euro Vest by Fly Behavior, Shoes by Zara
As the days grow shorter, we tend to gravitate toward grays, blacks, and other darker colors. Nothing against black or gray (clearly since I had on both in the "Office Girl" look), but one of the best things about Fall style is being able to dress in the colors that reflect the beautiful changing surroundings. My bright orange ankle-length pants got a lot of wear in the Spring and Summer. For Fall, I paired them with a striped long-sleeved tee and a warm, camel colored, knee length vest with a shawl collar. In the cooler morning temps, I belted the vest closed and the collar was perfect coverage for my neck and chest. By afternoon, the vest was light enough to leave open. Butterfly print pumps were a fun pattern mix to add to the uniformity of the stripes, and a deep Bordeaux colored bag kept me Fall fly!

"Weekend Girl": Dress by Free People, jean jacket by Target, leggings from Lettie Gooch Boutique, Shoes by JustFab
Nothing says "Hey Fall" like textured leggings. It's easy to pair leggings with a tank or tee, a flannel shirt, and a moto jacket, but that can be too many layers for a day where the temperature will reach the high 60s/low 70s. Who wants to spend a Saturday outdoors lugging a leather jacket around? Not me. Instead of overdoing the layers, I took a linen-blend, 3/4-length sleeved, tiered, ruffled dress and added a lightweight jean jacket, sweater knit leggings and suede ankle booties the color of Fall leaves. I topped off the look with a dove gray fedora and designer sunnies and suddenly my summer dress was warm enough to be weekend cool.

Take a second glance at a few of your summer faves before you pack them away for the Spring. There's no reason that you can't extend their longevity for a few more weeks.  Wishing you style success as you layer your way through the Fall!
