Fashion Investments: Connections at "Conversations with Claire"

Usually when I start a blogpost, I write a rough draft, sometimes two, as I am a little OCD and like my thoughts to be well outlined. This will be the first blog post I have written on the fly, because I have to get it done while I am still on a high from this amazing event!

On Sunday, March 25th, which was a beautiful bright and sunny day (although a little chilly), Claire Sulmers, Editor in Chief of, brought her fashion networking event, "Conversations with Claire" to Washington, DC.  When my hairstylist and GGF Gwynn told me about the event over a month ago, I immediately said "We HAVE to go!" In fact, I think I may have purchased my ticket while she was curling my hair!  We decided to attend the VIP brunch so the ticket was a little pricey for an "I need to be frugal" fashionista, but it was a what?
So I went for it and decided to make the most of my money. And I have to say, it was dollars well spent!

The event was held at MalMaison in Georgetown, and the atmosphere was as chic as the style of the attendees. I was so inspired by the beautiful sisters (and a few fine brothers) who broke out their fashion A+-game. As I met women who looked like me and listened to hustle hard stories about entrepreneurship goals/following your dreams that sounded like my story, I thought about my favorite Issa Rae quote, We have a tendency of trying to network up, but it’s really about networking across. "Who's next to you? Who's struggling? Who's in the trenches with you? Who's just as hungry as you are? And those are the people that you need to build with.  "Conversations with Claire" was this quote personified; just as magical as the "we can ALL eat, AND we can eat well!" picture that Issa's words created in my "I'm ready for the next level" imagination.

We also had an opportunity to listen to 6 dynamic panelists who spoke about their journeys to success and gave excellent advice in 2 sentences like "Never let your expectations exceed your efforts" - from party promoter turned entertainment industry executive/lifestyle expert, Kenny Burns. After the Q&A, the panelists and Claire mingled and chatted with us. Somehow, each of these well-known and brilliant talents was able to make me feel as if they were interested and excited to meet me.  I truly had the best time - it's refreshing to meet VIPs who are humble enough to laugh and fellowship like regular ole people. And who happen to dress their behinds off too!  Shateria wore a stunning hot pink suit by Fendi that, as she stated, brought "the sunshine to the event". But really her unpretentious spirit was the bright spot. DiAndre showed us his #GucciGang swag which was almost as dazzling as his amazing smile and personality.

And last but certainly not least, we had our moment with Claire, who was the most gracious hostess; educated, beautiful, stunning in her jumpsuit by S. Denton Collection, and best of all, she was funny

So how was this day a fashion investment? A fashion investment is something that might take you out of your usual budget range, but over time the return on your investment ends up being well worth the initial cost. Items like a Burberry trench, a Chanel flap bag or a LV Neverfull, a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels - items that will stand the test of time and always look classic. "Conversations with Claire" was most definitely a classic and timeless event. Whether the connections I made were for one day only or will be the foundation on which I build my empire, I guess only time will tell.  Either way, it was well worth the expense and I can't wait to do it again!

  1. Sounds like an amazing event! Everyone looked amazing, so it's nice to hear that they were as fabulous on the inside as the outside. Keep on movin', chica!

    1. They really were. Claire should bottle and sell whatever she gave her team and all the panelists to drink because they were engaging with everyone and fun. I think she's coming back in June and I will be there again!
